NEW DRUG TO WIPE OUT Diarrhea (No pun intended)

It's the first Third World Drug Blockbuster! The Drug is marketed to the poor people of the world. So now Starving Marvin in Africa can have Diarrhea free days!
Last Thursday, Napo announced a deal with Glenmark in India to develop and commercialize Crofelemer as a pediatric and acute infectious diarrhea treatment. Napo signed a similar deal on June 15 with Asiapharm in China.

The deals bypass the typical pharmaceutical approach: Target rich people and charge a high price. Under that model, drugs typically are available in the developing world about 15 years after they've been introduced in premium-price markets like North America and Europe, when patents have expired or companies can afford to distribute excess drugs at a loss...

... Napo is also partnering with an American company, Trine Pharmaceuticals, to test Crofelemer as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, which affects 15 million Americans. Trine expects to report its results in early 2006
.

...Also, "anti-motility" drugs like Imodium slow down flow of material through the intestine. While this stops diarrhea, it also allows whatever toxin is causing the diarrhea to linger in the body longer, giving it an extra opportunity to infect its host. That's why children, whose immune systems are not fully developed, as well as adult patients with immune problems like AIDS, can't take anti-motility medications.

Crofelemer instead stops the flow of excess water, which makes it possibly the first effective treatment for children and AIDS patients.

Over 1 million children die from diarrhea every year in developing nations where water is often contaminated. And it's the top complaint of many AIDS patients, Berkley said.

Great break through for the trots. Didnt realize that this was an issue, and was a lack of this type of medicine.

The Loss of a Companion... A Family loved one...

Yesterday after getting home from work, Me and Karen took one of our dogs to the vet to see why she hasn't been doing well. For the past three or four weeks Shelia, Our Shar pei / Pit Mix, has was going through a time where she wouldn't eat and when she would eat, So she was gaining weight and loseing it. She was up and down with this, but never was as skinny as she has been the past few weeks. Along with a short of depression the past several weeks. Upon arrival at the Vet, we checked in She was very happy to be out, and took the ride to the vet well. He had been vomiting lately to, not being able to keep anything down, while vomiting up stomach fluids. So, the vet checked her out for the obvisous, worms, and such and nothing was found, so she took her for X-Rays, and she wanted to keep her there over night. So Karen and I headed home. We called them about 12 ish or so, may be about 1. And thats when the vet told us that Her kidneys were failing and in the final stages. So, we told our son DJ, what was happening and what we could do for her, and He was very brave about it, And wanted to put her to rest and allow her to feel no more pain. So at about 2:30 am and 3 am today she was put down, and this morning lay to rest at her home, under her tree.

Such a young age to have to fight a losing battle. Shelia was about a year and a month old. She came in to this family with loving arms and was picked up off the street. Our Vet tells us that the kidney failure started before we picked her up, And that going through old food she could have eatten somthing bad or posionous whcih would have started it all. This explains the weight loss struggle through the past year.

Shelia will be Missed Greatly in presence, But never in heart or memory, She will always live on.

Sasser Worm Trial Ends... German Court Convict creator

VERDEN, Germany (AP) - The teenager who created the Sasser worm that snarled tens of thousands of computers last year was convicted Friday on charges including computer sabotage and given a suspended sentence, a court official said.
Sven Jaschan, 19, was found guilty of computer sabotage and illegally altering data, said Katharina Kruetzfeld, a spokeswoman for the court in the northwestern town of Verden. He was given a suspended sentence of one year and nine months. Jaschan also must perform 30 hours of community service at a hospital or home for the elderly, but will not have to pay court costs. The teenager has told officials his original intention was to create a virus, "Netsky A," that would combat the "Mydoom" and "Bagle" viruses, removing them from infected computers. That led him to develop the Netsky virus further - and to modify it to create Sasser.

The sentence is a joke, Kinda like Martha Stewart's, but she served time. However he was under age when all this happened. We'll see what comes of him.

The wonders of Email and things you dont remember you sent to your-self.

So a co-work work comes in to my office and sits down next today. As I finish reading a post on networkingworld.com, I turn to him and ask Whats up? Here is the conversaion...

Me: "Hey [Person], Whats up?"

Him: "hey!, I need you to check out my Outlook. I can't open a file that was sent to me."

Me: "ok no problem."
[I figured that the secuirty setting in Outlook that prevents users from opening things was checked..]

Him: "Well, you need to do your thing and connect to my computer or get up and go to it."

Me: "Ok, Cool.."
[Im lazy, and dont want to move, mainly I was on lunch so.. Easy fix I do it at my post. So I connect to his pc via remote connection]

Him: "Ok, go to Outlook, and open it and then go to the message that reads.. [His name]. Now Open it, I cant open that file, Why not.?"

[I looked at the security tab, and it was set to allow one to open the file... I looked at the message and noticed the file name... Legs.zip, While I looked at it and noticed what it was he said... And I quote!]

Him: "I didn't send myself anything? especially not a file called Legs, I would have remembered that name."

Me: "You didnt send this to yourself?, So this isn't from your home email?"

Him: "no."

Me: "Ok, lets look to see whom it is from..."
[so i checked the headers of the email and it "came from" someone from penn state college, the same name as his.]
Me: "You know any one from this email or from that college?"
Him: "nope, I dont know any one from there"
Me: "... (In aw of his glory) And you would have opened it if you could have?"
Him: "Hell yeah, I would have opened it, Just by the name alone..."
[You can quote me on that answer too...]
Me: "..."
Me: " Really!..."
Me: "..."

Wow, What a pervert... Geez.. Thats Great thing to know... It's a good thing that he didnt have WinZip or WinRar, or XP for that matter, any uncompressing tool would have open the damn thing, And that would have been it, I know he would have ran the damn file too. Looks like someone doesnt get WinRar installed on his computer.

All In All with my curiosity I saved the file to my Flash drive, for a look at later. the name of the file is 'legs.zip' > "f22-013.exe", more or less just a trojan.. Which I dont know.. didnt look at it all that much... [Information on the File]

Sasser Worm Trial to End this Week,,,

The lawyers in the Sasser computer worm are suppose to make their closing statements today. We'll see what the kid gets. Because after the trial, he could be slapped with Civil Law suits from the companies IT systems were affected... And damn.. thats a lot of companies, even indivuals.

Comet Hunting!

Click for a Larger viewDeep Impact Kicks Off Fourth of July With Deep Space Fireworks
After 172 days and 431 million kilometers (268 million miles) of deep space stalking, Deep Impact successfully reached out and touched comet Tempel 1.

The mission was a success, Although I was still not able to go out and view it myself, I got home late last night and logged on to Space.com and Nasa.gov to check out any information on how the mission went. The shots are stunning, and spectacular. I know more or less that they have shots and information that they will not release as of yet, so I wait for more information about the mission.

Here are some links for photos and information they have.

My July Fireworks, Ruined.... You Bastards....

Freaking bastards, I've been waiting and waiting for this day for as long as I knew that they were going to Crash a metal freakin Metal Disk shot from Deep Impact in to comet Tempel 1. So, All excited about it, start to read an article about the comet crash. As Im reading, I come to this in the article: "Astronomers are preparing for the event, which NASA says should be visible to observers with telescopes or large binoculars throughout the Western Hemisphere..." Then the next sentence makes it self known: "...except on the U.S. West Coast, where it will be below the horizon." Good god man, Tell me these things before hand. There goes my want to be out monday.

"Some observatories and astronomy associations are hosting Deep Impact parties, such as the University of Colorado's Fiske Planetarium, which is inviting people to set up telescopes on the front lawn, and some retailers say the mission has boosted sales." Screw this Im going to Colorado...

Nuclear power plant secrets leaked by computer virus

Experts at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus and spam analysis centers, have reminded internet users of the importance of computer security after media reports revealed that sensitive information about nuclear power plants has been leaked onto the internet from a virus-infected computer.

According to the Japanese press, approximately 40MB of confidential reports, related to nuclear power plant inspections over several years, was leaked from a virus-infected computer belonging to an employee of the Mitsubishi Electric Plant Engineering (MPE). The data is said to have been distributed to users of the Winny peer-to-peer file-sharing system. Winny is the most popular file-sharing network in Japan, with over a quarter of a million users.

New worm lures users with 'breaking news'

What breaking news!!! Michael Jackson died? No, wait... Pope is alive.. Its all conspiracies? The hell you say! Well apparently, the email is a conspiracy. Under the Kedebe-F e-mail worm, users who receive this email with such news and promise to see it in the attached file can expect to have their firewall, and security software disabled for them if they have a look at the attached file. This is all according to Sophos. Of course we all know that we shouldn't click on goodies brought to us by email by an unknown user, well at least unknown to yourself.
[Source link: sophos.com]

While we're on the subject of email goodness, Sophos.com has also reported on a new Virtual Postcard malware suprise. Here's how it goes down, You know those emails you get from your friends regarding a Virtual Postcard for your birthday, 4th of july, easter, [insert your festive day here]. Well, new spam is going around that is offering Free Virtual Postcards, and Telling you "HEY, If you liked this, Then why not send your friend one!", Well what happens is when you click on the link and visit the site you, unwillingly, download a trojan. How it gets there is by a vulnerability in Microsoft's software (a vulnerability in MS products, get out..:) and thus installs the Clsldr-D Trojan horse. If you think that just because you have software on your pc to keep you safe from this your very much wrong. Its not a harmless link and can do you harm. Its strongly suggested that you stay away from links that you are not sure of, or links that you have no clue of what they deal with. This is a fairly new Trojan, so alot of fixes aren't around for it, so keep your system up to-date with patches, security updates and all definitions for your Anti-Virus. Well your best bet is to disconect your pc from the internet and never go online again.

This is a FREE Speech Right...

WASHINGTON - Bloggers who built their Internet followings with anti-establishment prose are now lobbying the establishment to protect their livelihoods from federal regulations. Some are even working with lawyers, public relations consultants and a political action committee to do it.

"I like to think of myself as just a guy with a blog, but it's clear that 'just a guy with a blog' is different today than it was when I started three years ago," said Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, founder of the Web log www.DailyKos.com. "One sign of having arrived is when government regulators start wanting to poke their fingers into what you do."

"Anybody can participate. Anybody can have a voice. And any regulation that potentially chills that participation, I think, is a net detriment to the medium," Moulitsas said.

Moulitsas also is working with a lawyer who volunteered to help bloggers fight new government regulations and whose efforts were promoted in a PR firm press release Monday. He is prepared to lobby Congress himself if necessary, and he is the treasurer of BlogPac, a political action committee formed last year by bloggers.

Michael Krempasky, founder of RedState.org, said the FEC should treat bloggers like traditional media and exempt them from campaign finance regulation.

Adware vendors kept on the ropes by a harvard student...

The site, benedelman.org , regularly analyzes adware and exposes companies that sneak the stuff onto PCs without giving users sufficient warning. In his most recent post, Edelman contends that Google maintains relationships with adware vendors despite Google's policy against doing business with companies that fail to adequately seek consent before their software installs itself.

His work "is just totally invaluable," says Richard Stiennon, head of threat research for Webroot Software, a spyware-cleaning company. " It pulls the cloak off people's eyes. All you hear is claims from some of these vendors that they're good guys and don't do bad things and he turns around and says, 'What about this site where you're installed by a drive-by download? - Read the Full Article

This is a great article, Ben Edelman is doing good by informing users on how & how easy it is for internet users to get spyware and adware on their systems. Reasons he states on his site, are reasons why I do not use spyware & adware programs, because they too can install adware & spyware without the users knowledge. Now days I.E. is vulnerable more than ever with all the BHO's being installed without the user being aware of them. BHO's (Browser Helper Object) can be installed by the user or without the users knowledge. These result in Popups, even when using software like Earthlink's Popup Blocker, Yahoo's Popup Blocker and others like them. A good practice to help prevent these issues can be to shut off some ActiveX abilities in your
Internet Options, or Log in on your computer with a User that has low permissions, like not allowing to install programs, along with other settings you can slow down and sometimes stop these annoyances, However, I would recommend using a different browser than I.E., I strongly suggest Mozilla's FireFox or its own browser Mozilla 1.7.8.

Jack S. Kilby: Sweet sweet inventor...

"Jack S. Kilby, the Nobel-winning inventor of the integrated circuit, has succumbed to cancer at age 81. Jack’s circuit paved the way for the microchips that drive most modern electronics, thus allowing you to receive jammin’ hip-hop ringtones on your cell phone for a mere dollar. He also co-invented the hand-held calculator, seemingly motivated by his desire to form dirty words from blockish digital numbers. " - [Source: oddjack.com]
